MAKER CHALLENGE 1: CREATURE DESIGNER

This challenge is to design your own creature. A monster, or a new type of animal but please don’t make it too scary or we won’t be able to share it on our socials later as we’re letting people of all ages get involved.

There are lots of ways to make designs and you can choose what suits your age, ability level and also interests. Some ideas are below:

A) 3D model a design for a creature - use the shapes in your favourite modelling software to join together to create a unique creature design and don’t forget to name it. Get a parent (if you’re a child) to export your design as an .stl file to share with Bored Owl.

My attempt at a Frog blob creature is here, it was made using Womp :) then 3D printed using silk PLA.

Some 3D modelling tools which are easy to use:

  • Tinkercad (https://www.tinkercad.com) is popular in primary schools and its browser based so if your children are primary age they may already know how to use it. There are also great online tutorials available on the Tinkercad website too: https://www.tinkercad.com/learn

  • Womp (https://womp.com/index) is something I’ve come across lately which is fun and intuitive and browser based, it makes lots of nice goopy shapes. Just use the free version and don’t submit any files for printing as Womp is US based so it will be expensive if you’re in Australia.

B) Make a physical model from recyclable material. If you’re into cardboard and masking tape then go for it. But you might have to tell mum and dad not to recycle it before you complete it and don’t forget to name it and photograph it.

C) Make a physical model from scraps of material. Maybe if you make it really well by taking your time then you can give it to a friend as a handmade birthday present afterwards or give to your parents or a pet (assuming its pet safe!).

D) Draw either on your ipad or a piece of paper your creature, add lots of details. Don’t forget to name it.

When you’ve finished your creature if you’d like to share it with Bored Owl ask a parent (if you’re a child) to submit it using the form below. Enjoy your creature making!

MAKER CHALLENGE 2: TALLEST RECYCLABLES TOWER OR WIDEST BRIDGE!

We all have soo much recyclable material in our houses, but have you ever tried to make a great structure with it before putting it in your recycling bin? Maybe this school holidays you can (with your parents permission) collect useful clean recyclable material and create a great tall tower (maybe as tall as a bunk bed) or an awesome bridge to go between two chairs.

This challenge is all about making use of what you have and using your ingenuity….what will you repurpose….what will you try that noone else in the challenge has thought of? Feel free to use the usual masking tape but we want to make sure its all still recyclable at the end of the challenge so don’t wrap it in clingwrap or reams of gaffer tape or anything like that.

When you’ve finished your tower or bridge if you’d like to share it with Bored Owl ask a parent (if you’re a child) to submit it using the form below. Enjoy your building!

MAKER CHALLENGE 3: CUSTOMISE TO THE MAAXXXX!

We all love a good customisation crafting session so here’s your chance to share whatever you customise in the holidays with your fellow makers. Make sure you give a good description in a couple of sentences so if others want to try your techniques they get some ideas of where to start.

Some suggestions for items to customise:

Cardboard boxes - turn it into a vehicle or a doll house

Use a shoebox or other small box and decorate it using paint markers or textas and stickers and use it to store your precious things.

When you’ve finished your customisation project if you’d like to share it with Bored Owl ask a parent (if you’re a child) to submit it using the form below.
